Premium IGBT modules (Infineon, Fuji) are spec'd in the BOM; cheap clones (no-name or relabeled) save the factory $3–$8 per unit and cut MTBF by half. We verify module markings against the manufacturer's database; clones fail our incoming inspection.
ER70S-6 with Mn/Si out of spec produces porous, dirty welds. E7018 with high moisture in the coating causes hydrogen cracking. We require EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates for every lot and spot-check with on-site spectrometer for filler chemistry.

Three checks: (1) SAMR business license verified against the State Administration for Market Regulation registry — the registered scope must include welding-machine manufacturing, not just trade. (2) Facility audit — we visit the plant, walk the SMT line and assembly area, count workers on the floor, and photograph the test bay. A real factory has a load bank and a duty-cycle test rig. (3) Production records — we ask for shipping data of the past 12 months and randomly cross-check 2–3 buyer references. Trading companies that re-label stock from another factory fail all three checks; we exclude them from our supplier list.
Most Chinese welding-machine factories hold ISO 9001 (quality management) and CCC (China Compulsory Certification) for the domestic market. Welding machines and consumables (HS 8468, 8515, 8311) are not subject to Section 232 steel/aluminum tariffs — that protection applies to raw steel and aluminum, not welding equipment. Most welding machines and consumables face only MFN duty (0–3.7%) plus Section 301 List 4A (+7.5%), giving a combined landed duty of ~8–12% on the CIF value for US-bound shipments. The bigger trade-cost story is exchange rate and ocean freight, not tariffs. We always confirm the factory's actual backlog before quoting lead time, and we update weekly during production.
Counterfeit welding consumables (relabeled off-brand, expired lot, sub-spec chemistry) are a real risk in the open market. We mitigate through three layers: (1) Mill test certificate per EN 10204 3.1 — a lot-traceable chemistry and mechanical-properties document. (2) Sample retention — we retain a production-lot sample of every shipment for 24 months. (3) Random spectrometer check — for critical orders we use a portable OES spectrometer at the dock to verify filler-metal chemistry against the certificate.
